How to back up your personal data for iPhones and iPads

To make sure you keep all of your personal data before resetting your iPhone or iPad from Grover, do a backup first. You can choose between backing up your data with iCloud or iTunes: iCloud backups are stored in the cloud and encrypted automatically, and iTunes backups are stored on your computer with optional encryption.

iCloud backup:

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi
  2. Open Settings and select the first thing, which should be your name or the name associated with the Apple ID you used to set up the phone or tablet
  3. Select “iCloud”
  4. You will see on this page which apps and services are synced with iCloud, make sure everything you want to save like Photos and Contacts are selected
  5. Select “iCloud Backup” at the bottom of this list
  6. Select “Back Up Now” and stay connected to Wi-Fi until the backup is complete

iTunes backup:

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer
  2. Open iTunes and connect your phone or tablet
  3. Follow the steps after the prompt “Trust This Computer?” until your device appears in iTunes (if you can’t get iTunes to recognize your device, follow these steps from Apple to troubleshoot the connection).
  4. Select whether you want to encrypt your iTunes backup – if you want to save your Health and Activity data you must select an encrypted backup
  5. Make sure to write down the password for your backup somewhere safe
  6. Select “Back Up Now” and keep your device connected to the computer until the backup is complete
  7. Apple users have reported on the forums that for maximum safety, you should back up your photos and contact data separately from iTunes, using iCloud or a third party app

How to sign out of iCloud on iPhones and iPads

Make sure to sign out of iCloud before you reset your device! Otherwise the Activation Lock may stay on after you reset the device.

  1. Open Settings and select the first thing, which should be your name or the name associated with the Apple ID you used to set up the phone or tablet
  2. Select “Sign Out” at the bottom of the list
  3. When prompted, enter your Apple ID password and select “Turn Off”
  4. Select the data you want to keep on the device (in this case, none of it, since it should all be backed up already) and select “Sign Out”
  5. Tap “Sign Out” again to confirm that you want to sign out of iCloud

How to reset iPhones and iPads to factory settings

Once you have backed up all of your data to your iCloud or iTunes and signed out of iCloud on your device, you can reset it to factory settings directly on the device, or while it’s connected to the computer.

Reset on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open Settings, tap on “General”, then select “Reset” at the bottom of the list
  2. Select “Erase All Content and Settings”
  3. When prompted, enter your passcode or Apple ID password
  4. Wait for your device to reset

Reset with your iPhone or iPad connected to your computer:

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer
  2. Open iTunes and connect your phone or tablet
  3. Follow the steps after the prompt “Trust This Computer?” until your device appears in iTunes (if you can’t get iTunes to recognize your device, follow these steps from Applethese steps from Apple to troubleshoot the connection).
  4. Select your device in iTunes and click “Restore [device name]”
  5. Click “Restore” on the prompt
  6. Wait for your device to reset

Apple Watches

How to back up your personal data for Apple Watches

When you back up your iPhone to iCloud or iTunes, this includes Apple Watch data. For a full list of what data is stored from the Apple Watch, see Apple’s documentation. A backup of your Apple Watch data is also created on your phone before erasing all content and settings on the Apple Watch (if the Watch is still paired with the phone).

How to unpair your Apple Watch

  1. Keep your Apple Watch and iPhone close to each other, and open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone
  2. Go to the My Watch tab and tap your watch at the top of the screen
  3. Tap the (i) icon next to the watch you want to unpair
  4. Tap “Unpair Apple Watch”
  5. For Apple Watches with cellular data plans, select to remove your cellular plan
  6. Tap again to confirm
  7. Enter your Apple ID password to disable Activation Lock

How to reset Apple Watches to factory settings

  1. On your Apple Watch, tap Settings
  2. Select General, then Reset, then Erase All Content and Settings
  3. For Apple Watches with cellular data plans, select to remove your cellular plan
  4. Tap “Erase All” to confirm

MacBooks

How to back up your personal data for MacBooks

To make sure you keep all of your personal data before resetting your MacBook to factory settings, do a backup first. You can choose between backing up your data with Time Machine backups. Time Machine backups can be stored on an external hard drive, or any of the storage devices listed by Apple here and encryption is optional. iCloud backups as are stored in the cloud and automatically encrypted.

Time Machine backup:

  1. Connect your storage device to your MacBook
  2. When connected, your MacBook may ask if you want to use your external drive to back up with Time Machine. Apple recommends you tick the box next to “Encrypt Backup Disk”, then click “Use as Backup Disk”
  3. If Time Machine does not ask to use your drive, you can open it manually. Open System Preferences and click on Time Machine
  4. Select your external drive from the list of available disks. Apple recommends you tick the box next to “Encrypt Backup Disk”, then click “Use Disk”
  5. Click “Back Up Now” and keep your external hard drive connected to the computer until the backup is complete

iCloud backup:

  1. If you have not connected your computer to iCloud, open System Preferences and click on iCloud
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID, and select all of the data from your MacBook that you want to store in iCloud
  3. iCloud will automatically back up these files as soon as they are selected

How to sign out of your Apple accounts on MacBooks:

Make sure to sign out of iCloud, iTunes, iMessage, and unpair any paired Bluteooth devices before you reset your device!

How to sign out of iCloud on MacBooks:

  1. Open System Preferences and click on iCloud
  2. Click “Sign Out”

How to sign out of iTunes on MacBooks:

  1. Open iTunes. From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen or at the top of the iTunes window, click “Account”, then “Authorizations”, then “Deauthorize This Computer”
  2. When prompted, enter your Apple ID and password, then click “Deauthorize”

How to sign out of iMessage on MacBooks:

  1. In the Messages app, click “Messages”, then “Preferences”, then “Accounts”
  2. Select your iMessage account, then click “Sign Out”

How to unpair your Bluetooth devices on MacBooks:

  1. Open System Preferences and click on Bluetooth
  2. Hover over the devices you want to unpair then click the (x) button next to the device’s name. A prompt will then ask if you are sure, click “Remove”

How to reset MacBooks to factory settings

To restore your MacBook to factory settings, you will have to erase your hard drive and reinstall the macOS. Once the re-installation is complete, your MacBook will restart to a Welcome screen and ask you to choose your country or region – that’s how you know you are done and can shut down the computer.

How to restore your MacBook to factory settings:

  1. Start or restart your MacBook while holding down the Command and R keys at the same time so that it starts up in recovery mode. This may take slightly longer than a normal restart.
  2. From the menu macOS Utilities, select “Disk Utility”
  3. Choose View, then Show All Devices
  4. From the sidebar, select the disk to erase (most likely named “Macintosh HD”)
  5. Click the Erase button then complete these fields:
    • Name: Enter a name for the disk, such as “Macintosh HD”
    • Format: Keep the default settings
    • Scheme (if shown): choose GUID Partition Map
  6. Click Erase to begin erasing
  7. Exit back to macOS Utilities and select Reinstall macOS
  8. Follow the installation instructions
  9. Shut down your MacBook when installation is complete

Samsung Galaxy Phones

How to back up your personal data for Samsung Galaxy Phones

To make sure you keep all of your personal data before you reset your Samsung phone from Grover, do a backup first. You can choose between backing up your data with your Samsung Account or your Google Account:

How to back up your data with a Samsung Account:

  1. Navigate to the Apps screen, then Settings
  2. Select “Cloud and accounts”, then “Backup and restore”
  3. Under the Samsung Account menu, select “Back up data”
  4. Select the data you would like to back up, then tap “Back Up”

How to back up your data with a Google Account:

  1. Navigate to the Apps screen, then Settings
  2. Select “Backup and restore”
  3. Under the Google Account menu, tap the slider next to “Back up data”

How to reset Samsung Galaxy Phones to factory settings

Make sure you have made a backup of all the data you want to keep in your Samsung Account or Google Account before you reset your phone to factory settings!

  1. Navigate to the Apps screen, then Settings
  2. Select “Factory data reset”
  3. Select “Factory data reset” again on the next screen, then review the information
  4. When ready, swipe to and touch “Reset”
  5. If you have a security lock on your phone, you will be asked to enter your credentials
  6. To delete all your information and downloaded apps, touch “Delete all”
  7. Your phone will restart to the initial setup screen

Samsung Gear Watches

How to back up your personal data for Samsung Gear Watches

To prevent loss of any data, make sure to back up your watch before connecting it to a new phone or resetting it to factory settings to send back to Grover. Make sure your watch and phone have sufficient battery life before starting the backup process, and make sure they are not powered off or disconnected from your Wi-Fi network.

How to back up your watch data to your phone:

  1. Make sure your phone and watch are connected to your Samsung account
  2. Navigate to the Apps screen, then Settings
  3. Select “Cloud and accounts”, then “Backup and restore”
  4. Under the Samsung Account menu, select “Back up data”
  5. Make sure your watch data is selected, then tap “Back Up”

How to reset Samsung Gear Watches to factory settings

Before you reset your watch make sure you have a backed up your personal data to your Samsung account or your phone!

  1. From the watch Home screen, press Power then touch Settings or swipe down the Status panel to find the Settings icon
  2. Swipe to General management, then touch Reset Gear
  3. Touch the check mark to confirm and start the reset.

Microsoft Surface Books

How to back up your personal data for Microsoft Surface Books

To save your personal data from your Surface Book, you may want to save your settings such as menu layouts, language preferences, browser history, and app settings on OneDrive using your Microsoft Account. You can also manually back up important files to an external drive or network location using File History.

How to save your Surface Book settings using OneDrive:

  1. Sign in to your Surface with your Microsoft account and make sure you are connected to the internet
  2. Select the Start button, then Settings
  3. Click “Accounts”, then select “Sync your settings”
  4. Select the settings you would like to sync by turning the switch to On
  5. Once set On, that setting will sync automatically

How to save your files using File History:

  1. Connect your external hard drive to your Surface Book
  2. Select the Start button, then Settings
  3. Click “Update & Security” then “Backup”
  4. Click “Add a drive”, then choose your external drive or network location where you can safely store your files

How to reset Microsoft Surface Books to factory settings

Make sure you have backed up your Surface Book settings and any files you want to keep first!

  1. Go to Start, then Settings
  2. Click “Update & Security” then “Recovery”
  3. Under “Reset this PC”, select “Get started”
  4. Select “Remove everything”
  5. Select “Remove files and clean the drive”
